Matinee Idylls: The Washington Saxophone Quartet (WSaxQ)

Celebrating more than 40 years together, WSaxQ is the most widely heard saxophone quartet in the country and is heard daily through recorded arrangements of the theme for National Public Radio’s program “All Things Considered.” Featuring music from Bach to Gershwin, this dynamic ensemble enlightens and entertains audiences with its musical mastery.

How does nine-year-old Elmer Elevator rescue a baby dragon held captive on Wild Island? With pluck, chewing gum, lollipop sticks, and rubber bands, of course! In celebration of the 70th anniversary of Ruth Stiles Gannett’s charming adventure book, My Father’s Dragon, Enchantment Theatre Company brings to life the story of a compassionate and courageous boy and his unlikely friendship with a splendid yellow and blue-striped dragon. For nearly twenty years, Philadelphia-based Enchantment Theatre Company has produced original works based on classic children’s literature, using its distinctive blend of puppets, masks, creative scenic effects, and original music. “Everything about this world-class production is inventive and endearing; it fully captures the spirit of the beloved stories, the essence of childhood, and the imagination of the audience, both young and old. Chanticleer: A Chanticleer Christmas

“The world’s reigning male chorus” (The New Yorker) kicks off the holiday season at the Hylton Center with a concert of a cappella voices that includes classical music and popular holiday favorites. Chanticleer is renowned for the seamless blend of 12 extraordinary male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, with their superior technique, sublime tone, and unparalleled musicality. Their original interpretations span period and genre—from Gregorian chant to jazz, popular, and contemporary music. The group, which has been praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for its “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” has a long list of impressive accomplishments: sales of more than a million albums, winning two Grammy® Awards, being named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008, and induction into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. American Festival Pops Orchestra: Holiday Pops: Sounds of the Season

Dublin Irish Dance: Stepping Out

Follow the evolution of Celtic culture in Stepping Out, a high-energy extravaganza of sights and sounds presented by Dublin Irish Dance. These accomplished Irish step-dancers and musicians take the audience on a journey, exploring the history of the Celtic cultural experience through song and dance. This entertaining production reveals the influences that have shaped Irish music and dance throughout recent history: from the farms of rural Ireland in the 1800s to the Great Famine and the resulting mass migration to New York, where Irish and American cultures blended and influenced each other. Many of the artists in this ensemble have performed with popular acts like Riverdance, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance, and Celtic Woman. With the lightening-fast footwork of the step-dancers, the spirited melodies of an eight-member traditional Irish band, and the lovely sounds of their Irish vocalist, this performance is sure to amaze.

Live on stage, join special effects professionals who’ve worked on action-packed blockbusters like The Dark Knight Rises, Guardians of the Galaxy, Phantom of the Opera, and Game of Thrones for thrilling and revealing insights that bring the audience closer to the action than ever before. Feel the heat from an onstage inferno, marvel at gruesome sci-fi monsters, be blown away by apocalyptic weather, and hold on tight through huge explosions! “Be prepared to be stunned. One of Sweden’s oldest orchestras presents a dynamic concert that combines the traditional with the iconoclastic. Under the direction of Stefan Solyom, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (HSO) with its 61 musicians and violin virtuoso Catherine Manoukian perform a thrilling all-Beethoven program, including one of his most celebrated works, the Eroica Symphony. The HSO has performed at many prominent European venues, including three recent sold-out performances at the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg and in Vienna. Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter applauded the HSO’s performance of Beethoven’s Eroica as “…a brutally life-affirming spring river. A grand performance!”

Madcap mastermind Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo) reinvents Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 classic mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles, into a hilarious romp about everyone’s favorite detective and his most famous case. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being murdered one by one, and Sherlock Holmes, along with his trusted sidekick Dr. Watson, must work feverishly to crack the mystery of the curse before it dooms the newest heir. With only five energetic actors playing the roles of more than 40 quirky characters, this production from America’s oldest theater company takes the audience on a sidesplitting caper through the Devonshire moors, crowded railway stations, foggy London streets, and gloomy baronial mansions, where the duo searches for clues, runs into dead ends, and puzzles out the truth for the shockingly funny conclusion.

Bedtime is approaching, and this team of construction vehicles needs to get their rest. But Crane Truck is getting cranky, Cement Mixer takes too long with bath time, and Dump Truck just isn’t sleepy! Excavator and Bulldozer find that preparing for bed is a job in itself! Will they ever get some shut-eye before tomorrow’s day of work? A world premiere musical based upon the New York Times best-selling picture book about construction vehicles by author Sherri Duskey Rinker and illustrator Tom Lichtenheld demonstrates the importance of teamwork, follow-through, hard work, and bedtime rituals. Founded in 2004, the Bay Area Children’s Theatre works to enrich children’s lives, inspire their imagination, and introduce them to lifelong enjoyment of theater.

Recommended for ages 3–8; Pre-K–Grade 3
