OK, I admit we are in a drier state than last year at this time with its endless mounds of snow. Yet that does not stop the urge for warm, hearty meals accompanied by a good bottle of red wine. January has its own unique challenges, and there are a few good news items to warm the spirit.
In what is referred to as the quiet season at vineyards, there are some great sounds emitting for finding the right wines. How about an added incentive or two: Reserve red vintages with “attractively reduced prices.” That’s the strategy from Barboursville Vineyards with its special promotion, The January Reserve Red Celebration, beginning this Saturday, the 8th and continuing through the month. Library wines that are normally limited to Barrel Tasting events are ready to warm your heart and spirit with an added plus, a lighter touch on your wallet. Here’s your opportunity to fill your cellar and think about your own pairing opportunities.
While you are in the neighborhood, this might be a good time to check out the many new dining and wine programs at Keswick Hall. Chef Dean Maupin has a full menu of events including cooking demonstrations, kitchen tours, and wine dinners. Did I mention the property has reduced suite (call that, sweet) rates from now til March.
Here’s another plan to push aside the chilling temperatures: A visit to Purcellville’s Sunset Hills Vineyards. Saturdays and Sundays this month promise an uplifting change from the ordinary as they offer a special program: “Beat the Winter Blues.” These afternoons are filled with live music and what they call, feel good foods.
Taste, swirl, sip, and indulge. Wanna put all the reds and beef together? If so, then a 5-course paired wine dinner may fix the cravings. Magnolia’s at the Mill has a “Where’s the Beef Wine Dinner,” Saturday, January 29.
Fireplaces aplenty. January has its rewards!
