After a week of record heat the Dog Days at Great Country Farms are all about fun with your family and canine companions! Come and celebrate the fruits of summer at Great Country Farms at the 7th annual Dog Days Peach and Sunflower Festival on August 15 and 16, 2009 from 9 am – 6 pm. Dogs are always welcome at Great Country Farms, but this weekend is dedicated to the entertainment of man’s best friend. There will be the usual farm activitites like hayrides, the farm animal barnyard, U-pick peaches, freshly made peach ice cream from Middleburg Creamery, peach wine-tasting by Bluemont Vineyards, a pie-eating contest and live music. Then there will be special entertainment for the Dogs, this will include a brand new canine agility course, retrievers can bring their favorite water toy and go for a romp in the pond , the Paw Print craft station and the return of the Doggie Olympics. Misunderstood Rescue will also be in attendance. The canine agility course is brand new this year and will be set up by Leesburg’s Canine Country Club. The Leesburg Canine Country Club is an off-leash social club for dog lovers & their best friends. All dogs are welcome to try the agility course set up and to learn more about agility skills. As a special feature this year, the Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank will be on site to give out information. This facility, started in 1993 the same year as Great Country Farms, hosts a doggie blood donor program enabling dogs to help save other dogs lives. “Dogs need to be certified into the program so we hope to help generate awareness of this need and many dog heroes as a result,” said Great Country Farms’ event coordinator, Jennifer Regan.
Live Music from noon to 4pm each day will keep families’ toe-tapping all afternoon. The Boones Farmers, a high-energy blues and classic rock band, will be playing on Saturday and local favorite, Andrew McKnight, will entertain visitors to the farm on Sunday.
