Exhibit: Jamie McPhail & Caleb Mathews
Encaustic artist Jamie McPhail has found what she states as easy expression in art based on her home state of North Carolina with its natural beauty, rich tradition and diverse peoples. With the hotplate as her palette Jamie turns basic beeswax into a colorful liquid often adding oils, inks, pastels and collage elements to create allegorical, whimsical and always striking compositions. Local artist Caleb Mathews makes art to express his idea of beauty in the world. For this exhibit nothing could express more beauty than his series of cloud paintings in oils. Caleb offers his works as an opportunity for perfect reflection and a time of solace.
Meet the artists closing reception, Saturday, September 17th, 2-4pm.

Arts in the Village Gallery announces the August Featured Artist exhibit, Hot & Cool, showcasing the red hot dichroic fused glass designs of Dave & Dale Barnes juxtaposed with the cool and reserved acrylic abstracts of painter Kay Layne, for a truly well-balanced exhibit for your summer viewing pleasure.
Glossy vibrant colors flow and interact across the surface of circular, square, and rectangular vessels and plates. Upright sculptural pieces rest in metal frames to create unique spatial focal points. Using a variety of techniques, Dave & Dale Barnes create a colorful array of fused dichroic glass pieces that are alternatively, and sometimes simultaneously, organic and composed.
Kay Layne draws on her architectural and Southwestern roots for the palette and design of her abstract paintings. Through the use of geometric elements on open color fields, along with textured surfaces, Kay’s work speaks to viewers based on their own life experiences and interpretations.
Join Dave, Dale, Kay and other Gallery artists for the Featured Artists’ reception at the Gallery on Sunday, August 7th from 3 to 6 pm.

Dreams of Trees and Other Living Things
Arts in the Village Gallery announces the September Featured Artists exhibit Dreams of Trees and Other Living Things, a collaboration by paper collage artist Karen Oliver, and her daughter, ceramicist Amy Oliver.
Karen Oliver’s paper collages are created with an array of cut and torn papers, designed to render an impressionistic image that is captivating up close and from afar. Oliver enjoys depicting people, nature, landscapes and still life, but she finds herself gravitating towards trees, saying their strength, resilience and grace are the qualities that inspire her the most – elements that she looks for in all her subjects.
Ceramic artist Amy Oliver of Monkeytown Pottery uses colored slip and bare clay to carve and sculpt images on functional and non functional forms. The vibrancy of nature, trees and birds capture her interest. She is heavily influenced by Art History and the early sculptures and pots of ancient Mesopotamia and the energy of Vincent Van Gogh’s landscapes. Amy is also inspired when drawing with her friend Maria Nicklin, by critiques with her mother, and by her family.
Meet Karen, Amy and other gallery artists at the open to the public reception on Saturday, September 10th, from 5-8 pm.

Art at the Mill: Burwell Morgan Mill
Each year, the Burwell-Morgan Mill in the quaint village of Millwood, Virginia, becomes an extraordinary art gallery. Art at the Mill has become one of the premier art shows in the mid-Atlantic region, attracting artists and buyers from more than a dozen states.
During each show, around 300 artists display more than 1,000 pieces of art of all descriptions and media. Oil paintings are predominant, but other types of painting, mixed-media, sculpture, fine woodworking, and pottery round out the stunning diversity of the show. There is truly something for every taste, budget, and decor.
Art at the Mill is CCHA’s primary fundraiser, providing the operating funds for both the Mill and the Museum and Archives. CCHA retains 40% of each sale, the artist 60%. CCHA proceeds go to the maintenance and operations of the Burwell-Morgan Mill, our Museum in Berryville, costs associated with hosting Art at the Mill, special programming, and to the Sarah P. Trumbower Memorial Scholarship fund awarded to a Clarke County student pursuing university education in the fine arts.
Art at the Mill is a feast for the senses: people are stunned when they walk through the old door of the mill and are met with so much beautiful art housed in an amazing relic from the 18th century. After you’re done shopping, we suggest you grab a delicious lunch at Locke Modern Country Store across the street and have a picnic in our meadow. Fine art, history, and food in a lovely setting make this a perfect destination for anyone.

Arts in the Village Gallery announces the October Featured Artists Exhibit Light into Dark, a show exploring light and line exclusively through shades of black and white. Featuring the ceramics of Carol Clay-Ward, and the photography of Mary Louise Ravese, join us at the Gallery to experience this unique show.
Carol Clay-Ward features her black and white “Naked Clay Raku” pottery, created using a process whereby a newly fired vessel is doused in water, causing the glaze to pop off — hence the term “Naked Clay Raku.” Raku, functional vessels, as well as a selection of sculptural clay pieces, are co-mingled for an inspiring presentation of ceramic arts.
“Working exclusively in black and white forces people to look at the world in a different way … to see with a ‘photographer’s eye’ and notice the fundamental design of things and the play of light and shadow,” says photographer Mary Louise Ravese. Nature and architecture are among the subjects featured, all professionally printed and framed by the artist.
Meet Carol, Mary Louise and other gallery artists and enjoy wine, light fare, and saxophone musician Mike Girdy at the open to the public reception on Saturday, October 22nd, from 4 to 7 pm.
