Art at the Mill: Burwell Morgan Mill
In October 1990, a small group of artists got together and proposed an idea for an art show at the Burwell-Morgan Mill. Using whatever material they could find to install the art, these artists worked tirelessly to produce what was to become the very first Art at the Mill show. Over time, Art at the Mill has grown from a three-day show of a handful of art into one of the most recognized and prestigious art shows in the region. Though Art at the Mill has grown substantially over the years to include thousands of artists and buyers from all over the country, the show’s basic principles remain the same: to have fun, bring together artists and promote the extraordinary artistic talent of the region.
Art at the Mill will be open this spring during the following hours: Sundays-Fridays 12-5, Saturdays 10-6.
Mothers, please join us for a Free Admission Day on Mother’s Day, May 8th! Mothers get in free! Also, if you bring your mother, the both of you get in free!

David Summers: Felt Light
Les Yeux du Monde is pleased to present David Summers: Felt Light from 16 April – 29 May 2016. David Summers is a well known art historian and philosopher, whose tome, Real Spaces was lauded by Yale Art Historian Christopher Wood, as “one of the most substantial and original art-historical books ever published. Its range and rigor of thought, and the integrity and internal tension of its argument, are staggering and humbling.” Much the same could be said of Summers’ paintings, although they are ostensibly humble often humorous portrayals of seemingly mundane objects or fruits and vegetables, places or people. But the attention and the problems Summers sets for himself are mind boggling and rigorous, painting different objects and their reflections in various lights, and painting the spaces between the objects or pure light. Summers references other artists and philosophers in his paintings and titles (Al Kindi for instance was a 9th century first philosopher of light), but what makes Summers’ art totally unique is his representation of Felt Light or his empathetic touch and brushwork that elucidates and imbues each subject, no matter how seemingly ordinary, with a memorable and magical presence.
The exhibition will run from April 16 through May 29. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, 16 April from 5:30 – 7:30 (free and open to the public) and a Lunch with the Artist on Wednesday, May 4 from noon to one p.m. (reservations required, $15, free for Collectors Club). The gallery is located at 841 Wolf Trap Road in Charlottesville, VA and is open Thursday through Sunday 1 – 5 p.m. and by appointment.
