Film: “The Lion King”
(Disney, 1994) A young lion cub hides from his colony after being blamed for his father’s death, but triumphantly returns when he realizes it his destiny to be King. The animated Disney feature won two Academy Awards: for its original score by Hans Zimmer and for the song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice. Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, and featuring the voices of Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones and Jonathan Taylor Thomas, it is the highest-grossing animated film of the 20th century. “The Lion King” was added to the National Film Registry in 2016. Author Lecture
Join author, Joan Vernikos as she discusses how sitting is the new smoking. Dr. Vernikos was director of life sciences to NASA. Joan conducted gravity tests on the astronauts and now presents those findings in layman’s terms how what she learned in space now connects to earth. 2-4 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room, Sponsored by the Friends of the Culpeper County Library.
Steak Dinner Fundraiser
Mitchells Presbyterian Church will hold its Fall Steak Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. The costs are: Adults, $12 and Children 6-12, $5. Children under 6 eat FREE. Proceeds will go to Flood Relief funds in Texas. For more information and carry-outs, please call 825-1079.

“WeeOnes” at the Museum of Culpeper History
The Museum of Culpeper History hosts “WeeOnes” from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Open to children ages 1-5 and their caregiver, WeeOnes takes place in the Museum’s Kidz Discovery Zone where the children will participate in an activity, make a take-home craft, read a story, and have a snack too! A Night of Colonial Ice Cream Fun!

Child Car Seat Safety Check
The Culpeper Police Department will be holding a child car seat safety check September 15 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Culpeper Police Department located at 740 Old Brandy Road.
Culpeper Downtown Fiesta
The Culpeper Fiesta takes place in the heart of downtown Culpeper for 4 hours, 6 pm to 10 pm Friday, September 15th. Plan to bring your whole family down to the Depot (109 Commerce St., Culpeper, VA) for a night of good food and wonderful entertainment.
Free health screenings will be offered, including confidential HIV testing by FAHAAS, as well as glucose and blood pressure checks by University Physicians Group. Free flu shots will be administered by Walgreens. Complimentary children’s ID’s will be offered by the Culpeper Sheriff’s office and the Culpeper Town Police at the Food Closet location at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Kids can participate in children’s yoga, presented by Pranapiloga, while they wait!
The Lions Sight and Hearing Van will be in the Farmers’ Market parking lot, offering free screenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. No appointment is necessary.

(age 2) Mondays, 10:30 This is a fun and engaging “lapsit” program designed to help children develop the early literacy skills they need to be ready to learn to read when they enter Kindergarten. Stories, songs, puppets, and finger plays make this a fun time for all. Parents sit on the floor with their children in their laps, helping them to participate in the program. No registration necessary. Older siblings are welcome to attend.

(Live) The Martin Family Circus returns to the Packard Campus Theater following a full-house performance last December. Bringing their energetic mix of Country, Pop and Rock music, this self-contained vocal-driven melodic band of two parents and four kids ranging in age from ten to nineteen packs a punch with their rich stack of family harmonies in a soaring blend. Representing four generations of musical heritage, Martin Family Circus delivers soulful family harmony, steeped in traditional roots. Bel Canto Vocal Ensemble
Don’t miss an opportunity to hear the music of Bel Canto, a group of fifteen singers from a five county area, who gather in Madison every Tuesday to share their love of music.
They will be performing at Little Washington Theatre, 291 Gay Street, Washington, VA., at 7 pm, on Saturday, September 23. This fall marks their fifteen season of singing together as Bel Canto.
Under the direction of local musician, Lauren Estes, Bel Canto has prepared a delightful variety of colorful pieces, among which are familiar favorites Blue Moon, Fields of Gold, Deep Purple, Blue Indigo, True Colors, Greensleeves, and Lennon and McCartney’s Blackbird, as well as an Italian madrigal and a traditional Irish Ballad.
Admission is free, although there will be an opportunity to contribute to Bel Canto’s ongoing support if you wish.
If you enjoy listening to Bel Canto as much as they enjoy singing, your evening will be well spent!
Film: “Fifty Candles”
(Hodkinson Pictures, 1921) Irvin V. Willat directed this impressively somber melodrama based on a novel by Earl Derr Biggers, who also penned the Charlie Chan detective series. A Chinese man, (Hung Chin Chung) in Hawaii escapes deportation and certain death by becoming the virtual slave of rich scoundrel Henry Drew. Years later, a number of people on board a ship sailing to San Francisco with the Drew family and Chung wish Drew dead, and one of them succeeds. This strikingly photographed and rarely seen mystery stars Bertram Grassby, William Carrol, Edward Burns and Marjorie Daw. Jon Marsalis will provide live musical accompaniment.
