Matinee Idylls: The Washington Saxophone Quartet (WSaxQ)
Celebrating more than 40 years together, WSaxQ is the most widely heard saxophone quartet in the country and is heard daily through recorded arrangements of the theme for National Public Radio’s program “All Things Considered.” Featuring music from Bach to Gershwin, this dynamic ensemble enlightens and entertains audiences with its musical mastery.

Come enjoy a country Christmas as this award-winning band returns to our stage for a holiday concert of country and bluegrass favorites. Dubbed the “Rockstars of Bluegrass” by Country Music Television, Dailey & Vincent are extolled throughout the music industry as one of the most exciting Bluegrass bands in America. They chose to record their live DVD and PBS TV special for sold-out audiences in the Hylton Center’s Merchant Hall because of its excellent acoustics, and now they’re coming back to share their talents and wit for a special holiday treat. Dublin Irish Dance: Stepping Out
Follow the evolution of Celtic culture in Stepping Out, a high-energy extravaganza of sights and sounds presented by Dublin Irish Dance. These accomplished Irish step-dancers and musicians take the audience on a journey, exploring the history of the Celtic cultural experience through song and dance. This entertaining production reveals the influences that have shaped Irish music and dance throughout recent history: from the farms of rural Ireland in the 1800s to the Great Famine and the resulting mass migration to New York, where Irish and American cultures blended and influenced each other. Many of the artists in this ensemble have performed with popular acts like Riverdance, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance, and Celtic Woman. With the lightening-fast footwork of the step-dancers, the spirited melodies of an eight-member traditional Irish band, and the lovely sounds of their Irish vocalist, this performance is sure to amaze.

One of Sweden’s oldest orchestras presents a dynamic concert that combines the traditional with the iconoclastic. Under the direction of Stefan Solyom, the Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra (HSO) with its 61 musicians and violin virtuoso Catherine Manoukian perform a thrilling all-Beethoven program, including one of his most celebrated works, the Eroica Symphony. The HSO has performed at many prominent European venues, including three recent sold-out performances at the Great Festival Hall in Salzburg and in Vienna. Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter applauded the HSO’s performance of Beethoven’s Eroica as “…a brutally life-affirming spring river. A grand performance!”

Danú
A leading traditional Irish ensemble comes to the Hylton Center for this big pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration of festive Celtic music. Praised by The Washington Post for their “vibrant mix of virtuosity, energy, and empathy,” Danú performs both ancient Irish music and new repertoire for a lively, flawless performance. Mason’s University Singers, a talented student ensemble from George Mason University’s School of Music, join them onstage for a one-of-a-kind experience. Hailing from Ireland’s old counties, this award-winning ensemble has thrilled audiences throughout Europe and North America with stops at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Symphony Space in New York. The virtuoso players are renowned for their mastery of authentic Irish instruments—flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, and bouzouki—which is matched by gorgeous vocals in English and Gaelic. Keyboard Conversations® with Jeffrey Siegel Beethoven and Friends
Virtuoso pianist Jeffrey Siegel closes our season at the Hylton Performing Arts Center with three 18th century musical masters who were contemporaries of each other. In Beethoven and Friends, Jeffrey Siegel performs Haydn’s delightful Sonata in D, Mozart’s brooding, contemplative Fantasy in D minor, and Beethoven’s passionate, stormy Sonata Pathétique, while offering witty and insightful commentary about the music and composers before playing each piece. Piano music enthusiasts and newcomers alike cherish Jeffrey Siegel’s beloved “concerts with commentary” series that makes everyone feel like a classical music insider. An interactive Q&A will conclude this program.
