March 2017
Photographs of Italy, by Susan Raines
Photographs of Italy, by Susan Raines, will show at the Middle Street Gallery in Sperryville, Va. The images will be accompanied by works of art by other gallery members. The gallery is now located above the Before & After Cafe at 31 Main St. in Sperryville, Va. It is open from 10 am until 5 pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Raines presents colorful and dramatic views of the two old cities, ranging from decrepit but oddly enticing modern street scenes to stark marble statues and structures from centuries ago. Mostly free of the crowds one associates with Rome and Florence, the images focus on the beauty of the ancient cities.
Gallery Hours: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Fridays-Sundays.
http://middlestreetgallery.org/Shakespeare in the ‘Burg Theater Festival
The fourth Shakespeare in the ‘Burg theater festival will be held March 31-April 2, 2017 in beautiful, historic Middleburg, Va. This year’s event will feature a new theater company as well as a greater opportunity to support emerging playwrights—all in an intimate and lovely new venue.
Shakespeare in the Square, based in New York, NY, will perform Two Gentlemen of Verona; a play many scholars believe may be the first Shakespeare ever wrote. The troupe will also perform the winning plays from the festival’s one-act playwriting competition, a feature of the festival that has grown over the years. For younger theater fans, Nicolo Whimsey will introduce Shakespeare through music, comedy, juggling and more.
www.shakespeareintheburg.comWater in the Desert: New Paintings by Janet Bruce
Les Yeux du Monde is pleased to present Water in the Desert: New Paintings by Janet Bruce from March 31 – May 7, 2017. Janet Bruce is well known for her masterful oil paintings that merge gestural brushwork and expressive line with Mark Rothko like horizontal spaces and veils of color. A studio major at Amherst College, where she had classes with Abstract Expressionist Grace Hartigan, Bruce continued her studies with master classes at the Art Institute of Boston and at the Corcoran in D.C. with William Christenberry. She has exhibited widely and is in collections throughout the U.S. and abroad, including the Emily Couric Cancer Center in Charlottesville. In 2016, she was awarded two prestigious fellowships and residencies—one at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst VA and another in Assisi, Italy at the Arte Studio Ginestrelle. The paintings she will exhibit in this show are inspired by her time in these places and also by her current work with Maurizzio Pellegrin, director of the National Academy in New York.
