MADE IN TENNESSEE: MANUFACTURING MILESTONES
In March 2016, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum unveiled the special exhibit “Made in Tennessee: Manufacturing Milestones.” The exhibit chronicles the rich variety of manufacturing traditions in Tennessee over the past 2 ½ centuries from the early agricultural and craft heritage to our current age of advanced technology and global competition. The diverse panels and artifacts highlight the history of manufacturing in Tennessee, while also featuring a huge variety of the industries and companies that were once found – or still exist – throughout the state, including several local manufacturers. The museum will also host a variety of programs throughout the life of the exhibit.
“Made in Tennessee: Manufacturing Milestones” is a traveling exhibition organized by the East Tennessee Historical Society in Knoxville, Tennessee. The exhibition project was made possible through an educational grant from the Alcoa Foundation to highlight Tennessee’s manufacturing story—past, present, and future. The grant was awarded in honor of Alcoa Tennessee Operations 100th Anniversary and the announcement of its automotive expansion project on May 2, 2013. Additional support comes from the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The exhibit will run at the museum from March 1 to August 14, 2016.

Members of the Graves, Aylor, Berry, Creel, Estes, Fitzhugh, Hawkins, Kendall, Kite, Knighting, Lillard, McDaniel, McMullen, Melone, Slaughter, Shotwell, Sims, Smith, and many other families will be present to discuss their memories of the mountain life in Madison. We need your help!
In order to reach more people and expand our programs, NSLM is looking for volunteers to serve as ambassadors in the community and enhance the experience of our visitors.
We will host a Volunteer Open House on Monday, April 18. Join us at 10 am, 1 pm, or 6 pm in the Library to learn more about our history, as well as how you can join our growing team and make a difference! There will be refreshments and staff on hand to answer questions about available positions and how each job contributes to our mission.
See the list of volunteer opportunities below, which range from assisting with Library tasks such as shelving, to special event needs including parking and greeting guests, to staffing the front desk and interacting with visitors. Some volunteers assist us weekly, while others come on an as needed basis for educational programs and special events. We are sure we have something to fit everyone’s schedule.
