Bing Crosby stars as Father Chuck O’Malley, a kindhearted Catholic priest whose upbeat personality, musical gifts, and acts of compassion rejuvenate his parish when he takes it over from an established old veteran, played by Barry Fitzgerald. Crosby sings seven songs in the film including the Oscar-winning “Swinging on a Star.” The highest-grossing picture of 1944, “Going My Way” was nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards, winning seven, including Best Picture. Produced, directed and story by Leo McCarey, the musical comedy was added to the National Film Registry in 2004. “I Surrender Dear” (1931), a comedy short directed by Mack Sennett and starring Bing Crosby who sings his hit song of the same name, will be shown before the feature. Nothin’ Fancy Bluegrass
From the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, comes one of the most entertaining bands in the bluegrass genre, Nothin’ Fancy. As a matter of fact, they’ve won Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America s award for Entertaining Group of the Year six times!
Their strong vocals, powerful instrumentation, and energetic stage presence, along with their friendly down-to-earth charm keeps people coming back for more. Nothin’ Fancy is not just carrying on the tradition of bluegrass music; they are contributing to the creation of a new tradition within the acoustic music genre.
Note: They will be playing two nights – Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17 – at the Barns of Rose Hill.

The Library of Congress Packard Campus Theatre presents “The Golden Age of Comedy”
Robert Youngson was responsible for reacquainting movie audiences with the work of the great silent comedians with a series of compilation films he made between 1957 and 1970. Youngson had previously produced several award-winning short documentaries, and “The Golden Age of Comedy” was the first compilation of its kind in feature-length form. While many past greats are spotlighted in the film, the true “stars” are Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, shown at their very best. The rest of the film offers choice comic bits from the likes of Ben Turpin, Billy Bevan, Will Rogers, Charley Chase, Harry Langdon, and even Carole Lombard. The feature will be preceded by two of Youngson’s earlier comedy compilations, the 20 minute shorts “When the Talkies Were Young” (1955) and “This Was Yesterday” (1954). A Day with Holly Heider Chapple–A floral design symposium
The Leesburg Garden Club invites you to spend a special day with award-winning floral designer Holly Heider Chapple. Known in the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings and the world over, Holly will have you up to your elbows in beautiful flowers and lead you through the basics of show stopping floral design.
You do not need to be a professional floral designer or garden club member to participate. This unique and very affordable opportunity is open to anyone who loves flowers. Girl friends’ day out, couples enjoying a together day, brides looking for ideas, everyone is invited.
Holly’s presentation will include making a garland, and you will be invited to join in. She will demonstrate building a large urn arrangement using her “no oasis” technique and work with larger groups to create a seasonal arrangement in a compote. There are other arranging techniques and surprises in store!
The event is held in the beautifully restored bank barn at Riverside on the Potomac, Leesburg, VA, an ideal event location. It serves as a fitting backdrop to Holly’s imaginative and trend setting design work.
To start your day Savoir Fare Ltd will provide coffee and sweets from their food truck. Vendors selling unique floral and garden items will be available during breaks. There will be raffles and door prizes! The breakfast and a scrumptious Box Lunch by Savoir Fare Ltd is included in the registration fee.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Leesburg Garden Club beautification projects in Leesburg and Loudoun County. Projects include expansion of the award-winning Native Tree Walk, a collaborative effort between the Leesburg Garden Club and the Town of Leesburg, scholarships for graduating seniors and Nature Camp participants as well support of the gardens at Oatlands Plantation and the George C. Marshall house.
The Leesburg Garden Club is grateful to Holly for providing this exceptional opportunity at a discounted price. The fee is $150 until Tuesday, September 6. The Library of Congress Packard Campus Theatre presents “Rafter Romance”
William Seiter directed this romantic comedy that stars Ginger Rogers as Mary, an underpaid New York working girl who is having trouble paying the rent on her Greenwich Village apartment. Her landlord comes up with a solution – that she share a loft in shifts with Jack (Norman Foster), a struggling artist who works as a night watchman. Though they never see each other, Mary develops a pronounced dislike for Jack – until she meets him. Matters get more complicated by the presence of Robert Benchley as H. Harrington Hubbell, Mary’s boss, a lecherous if bumbling executive. Benchley was known for writing and starring in a number of short subject comedies both at MGM and Paramount. Two of them, “The Witness” (1942) and “The Courtship of the Newt” (1938), will be shown before the feature. Free, at the Library of Congress Packard Campus Theater located at 19053 Mt.
