Film: 1987 Double Feature – “Dirty Dancing” & “Predator”
1987 Double Feature – “Dirty Dancing” (Vestron, 1987) While spending the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) falls for the camp’s dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze). This low-budget romantic drama by a new studio with no major stars (except Broadway legend Jerry Orbach in a supporting role) became a major box office hit and was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video. The “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet for Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.
“Predator” (20th Century Fox, 1987 – R rated*)
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this science-fiction action film as the leader of an elite special forces team who are on a mission to rescue hostages from guerrilla territory in Central America’s Northern Triangle. Directed by John McTiernan and also starring Carl Weathers and Kevin Peter Hall, the film was Oscar nominated for Best Visual Effects. It spawned two sequels, “Predator 2” (1990) and “Predators” (2010), and two crossover films with the “Alien” franchise, “Alien vs. Predator” (2004) and “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007). * No one under the age of 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian. “3rd Annual Dino-Walk” 9:00am – 1:00pm- The annual Walk with the Dinosaurs event at the Luck Stone Quarry is on July 15th and passes are going quickly. Visitors will be escorted to the bottom of the quarry and discover an amazing group of 215 million year old dinosaur tracks! Their brand new project – The Evening News – includes originals, old favorites, a cappella and hot instrumental numbers, and tight harmony singing takes a spotlight with Will’s smooth lead and baritone, Danny’s cutting tenor, and John’s soaring high-baritone.

Film: “Breakfast at Sunrise”
(First National, 1927) Wealthy Parisienne Madeline (Constance Talmadge) and penniless Pierre (Don Alvarado), decide to teach their respective unfaithful sweethearts a lesson by getting married to each other, then divorce when their current partners are properly repentant. But things do not necessarily go according to plan. Malcolm St. Clair directed this light romantic comedy that features Bryant Washburn and Alice White as the other halves of the foursome along with Marie Dressler, cast as a worldly-wise queen. Information: Art Comes Alive camp includes hands-on instruction in: oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, traditional sculpture and unconventional materials and mixed media.
Ages 10-14, camp runs July 17-21 from 9am-12pm.
Camp will be at NSLM in Middleburg. Participants will receive security clearance access into the Museum’s art collection. We are proud to partner with Hill School for this camp, but anyone can sign up!

Third Thursday Concert
Everyone’s favorite Thursday returns with Culpeper Renaissance, Inc.’s 3rd Thursday Summer Concert Series. Grab your dancing shoes, a lawn chair and invite family and friends to join in the fun from 5 to 9 p.m., directly in front of the Depot on Commerce Street in downtown Culpeper. The festivities continue on July 20th, with the Band of Oz a Carolina Beach Band. The Band of Oz is one of the most successful groups in the Southeast, featuring a full horn section and a dynamic eight-member group. Advance tickets are available for $5 per concert. Tickets are available until the day before the event at the following locations: Pepperberries located at 102 East Davis Street Street, Museum of Culpeper History at 113 South Commerce Street, Randy’s Flowers by Endless Creations LLC at 211 West Evans Street, and Oak View National Bank at 450 James Madison Highway. (Disney, 1937) Walt Disney’s groundbreaking “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”—the first American animated feature film and a warm and joyful rendition of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale—is still in a class by itself. In addition to winning an Honorary Academy Award as a “significant screen innovation, which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field,” the film was also nominated for best musical score.
