Travel back in time on the anniversary of Washington’s death to hear his family, friends, and enslaved servants recount their poignant firsthand experiences of his passing.
Guided through the candlelit Mansion, meet members of Washington’s family, along with history interpreters who will retell firsthand experiences of the events leading up to and following the death of George Washington. On the journey through the Mansion, Tobias Lear will recount Washington’s last moments. Stop at the bedroom where Washington took his last breath, surrounded by people who were close to him.
Before exiting the Mansion, view the New Room. Here, “Martha Washington” will be dressed in her mourning clothes sitting beside a replica of Washington’s mahogany coffin, much like mourners did in 1799 for three days after our first president’s demise.
Hear their poignant stories of Washington’s death before venturing to the place of Washington’s final burial, where visitors will hear the famous eulogy.
Guests have the opportunity to follow the path of Washington’s 1799 funeral procession and participate in a candlelight wreath laying ceremony and tribute.
