The Library of Congress Packard Campus Theatre presents “The Missing Link”
(Warner Bros., 1927). Sydney Chaplin, Charlie’s older half-brother, plays Arthur Wells, a penniless poet who has consented to impersonate a big-game hunter on an African exploration headed by Lord Dryden and Colonel. Live musical accompaniment by Ben Model. The 1915 Syd Chaplin comedy short “No One to Guide Him” will be shown before the feature. 2nd Annual The Art of The Scarf
October 19 – October 30, 2016. We have invited over a dozen artisans who create wearable scarves and shawls in many mediums to participate in the show. On display and for sale will be close to 200 scarves and shawls that are dyed, woven, knitted, felted and crocheted in numerous types of fibers including silk, wool, tencel, mohair, alpaca, rayon, cotton and metallics as well as others. As part of the show the gallery will host a presentation on New Ways to Tie & Wear Scarves on Thursday October 27th, starting at 6:30PM. To commemorate the recent release of a 5-Disc Blu-ray and DVD set by KinoLorber and the Library of Congress, the newly-restored digital restoration of Oscar Micheaux’s “Within Our Gates” (Micheaux Book & Film Company, 1920) will be screened. Two short films featured in the collection will precede the feature: “Verdict Not Guilty” (1934), made by self-taught filmmakers James and Eloyce Gist, and the recently-rediscovered comedy “Hot Biskits” (1931), the earliest known film directed by Spencer Williams. Rappahannock Fall Colors Float
Mark the change in seasons along the Rappahannock River with a fall paddling adventure in kayaks and canoes! Join Friends of the Rappahannock and Guide Brian Gudmundsson on an adventure from Hole in the Wall to Motts Run Landing on Saturday, Oct. 22. This trip is scheduled to put attendees on the river when the riparian vegetation is at its most colorful and beautiful. Along the way, participants will visit historic canal locks, observe wildlife and learn about river ecology. Dress for the weather! Bring lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Minimum age is 12 years old. This is a strenuous event with moderate rapids and some paddling experience is needed. Your ticket includes boat and PFD. No personal boats allowed. Meet at Motts Landing at 9 a.m., we’ll shuttle to the put-in and be finished by 4 p.m. The cost is $50 for individuals/$150 for families of 3 or 4 ($40/$120 for FOR members). Come and join us for a Bollywood interactive dance lesson! Learn this high energy dance from Indian films! We will have a short interactive dance lesson followed by freestyle dancing. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
Jaya Mathur of the Dance to Health Society (dance2health.com), has been trained in three forms of Indian classical dance, Bharatnatyam, Kathak and Manipuri. Jaya has performed, particularly in the Bharatnatyam style, at many culturally prestigious venues, such as the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian Museums and Wolftrap. Jaya teaches classical, folk and Bollywood dance with the Dance to Health Society. Her students have performed at cultural shows at universities, temples and folk life events.
