Art at the Mill: Burwell Morgan Mill

Saturday, October 1, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

Burwell Morgan Mill, 15 Tannery Lane
Millwood, VA United States

Each year, the Burwell-Morgan Mill in the quaint village of Millwood, Virginia, becomes an extraordinary art gallery. Art at the Mill has become one of the premier art shows in the mid-Atlantic region, attracting artists and buyers from more than a dozen states.

During each show, around 300 artists display more than 1,000 pieces of art of all descriptions and media. Oil paintings are predominant, but other types of painting, mixed-media, sculpture, fine woodworking, and pottery round out the stunning diversity of the show. There is truly something for every taste, budget, and decor.

Art at the Mill is CCHA’s primary fundraiser, providing the operating funds for both the Mill and the Museum and Archives. CCHA retains 40% of each sale, the artist 60%. CCHA proceeds go to the maintenance and operations of the Burwell-Morgan Mill, our Museum in Berryville, costs associated with hosting Art at the Mill, special programming, and to the Sarah P. Trumbower Memorial Scholarship fund awarded to a Clarke County student pursuing university education in the fine arts.

Art at the Mill is a feast for the senses: people are stunned when they walk through the old door of the mill and are met with so much beautiful art housed in an amazing relic from the 18th century. After you’re done shopping, we suggest you grab a delicious lunch at Locke Modern Country Store across the street and have a picnic in our meadow. Fine art, history, and food in a lovely setting make this a perfect destination for anyone.

LIGHT INTO DARK

Saturday, October 1, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

Arts in the Village Gallery, 1601 Village Market Blvd., Suite 116
Leesburg, 20175

Arts in the Village Gallery announces the October Featured Artists Exhibit Light into Dark, a show exploring light and line exclusively through shades of black and white. Featuring the ceramics of Carol Clay-Ward, and the photography of Mary Louise Ravese, join us at the Gallery to experience this unique show.

Carol Clay-Ward features her black and white “Naked Clay Raku” pottery, created using a process whereby a newly fired vessel is doused in water, causing the glaze to pop off — hence the term “Naked Clay Raku.” Raku, functional vessels, as well as a selection of sculptural clay pieces, are co-mingled for an inspiring presentation of ceramic arts.

“Working exclusively in black and white forces people to look at the world in a different way … to see with a ‘photographer’s eye’ and notice the fundamental design of things and the play of light and shadow,” says photographer Mary Louise Ravese. Nature and architecture are among the subjects featured, all professionally printed and framed by the artist.

Meet Carol, Mary Louise and other gallery artists and enjoy wine, light fare, and saxophone musician Mike Girdy at the open to the public reception on Saturday, October 22nd, from 4 to 7 pm.

Virginia Landscape Art Exhibition for The month of October 2016 at The Byrne Gallery

Saturday, October 1, 2016 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

The Byrne Gallery, 7 W. Washington St.
Middleburg, 20117

The Byrne Gallery will be featuring beautiful Virginia Landscape paintings by two nationally recognized landscape artists.
The exhibition will be on for the entire month of October 2016. The will be a special reception for the artists on Saturday, October 8th, 2016
from 5 PM to 8PM at The Byrne Gallery in Middleburg, Virginia. The event is free and everyone is invited to attend.

Gerald Hennesy, a native of Washington, D.C., attended the Corcoran School of Art on a scholarship. He began his art career as a newspaper artist, but after Naval duty during WW II and Korea, he began devoting himself exclusively to fine art painting. Since 1972 he has maintained his studio at the home he built in Virginia.

Gerald paints primarily in oil in an impressionistic style, working both in plein-air and in his studio. It is important that a subject chosen for a painting be exciting to him, so it will then also be exciting and interesting to the viewers of his completed piece. Once a scene has been selected and the composition sketched in, Gerald paints rather rapidly, while attempting to achieve a freshness of color and expressiveness in his brushwork. He is particularly concerned with depicting the effect of light on his landscape and seascape subjects.

Jim Rodgers was born in northern New Jersey. Mr. Rodgers studied at the Art Students League in New York City and also attended the Ridgewood Art Institute where he studied landscape painting. Mr. Rodgers paintings focus on the essential details emerging from a cohesive mass augmented with poetic highlights evolving into a hybrid fashioned from painterly and impressionistic inspirations in a contemporary sense.

Mr. Rodgers paints a wide range of subject and subject matter: from lush American and European landscapes to intimate genre paintings as well as elegant and sophisticated still life and floral renderings. His paintings reflect richness in tone and color in his style that comes from over 30 years of professional study and numerous sojourns throughout America and Europe.

About the Artist: It has been 25 years since Tia Maggio moved from the Big Apple to (then) rural Loudoun County Virginia, and where she raised her two children. Currently she resides in bucolic Millwood, a place that has provided much inspiration. Her pastels of sloping Piedmont hills and skies have been exhibited locally in Northern Virginia and New York City, and are in private collections in the U.S., Italy, Southern France, and most recently, Guatemala. Tia pulls her inspiration from nature as “it is the only thing that really makes sense to me – wild sunsets, storms, brambles and branches.” Once described as a tonalist, she describes herself as a nature based expressionist.

2016 Waterford Fair

Friday, October 7, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

Waterford, VA

Come to the Waterford Fair and return to a day from an earlier time. Tour historic houses, watch juried artisans demonstrate techniques of traditional craftsmanship, stroll through the Old Mill and vintage barns transformed into galleries for painting, traditional crafts, dried flowers, and more.

Traditional Crafts
Since the first Waterford Homes Tour & Crafts Exhibit in 1943, the number and variety of craft demonstrators has risen steadily. This is a “teaching Fair,” and so we choose traditional artisans who will inform our visitors about traditional crafts through the demonstration of their work and techniques. And as you stroll through the village you may see a furniture maker carving a delicate design for a cabinet, a blacksmith twisting a glowing rod of iron, a potter shaping clay, a frame being painted, candles being dipped, or pewter being hammered into shape–all skills once commonplace in Virginia’s agricultural villages. We select traditional artisans not only for their mastery of skills and prominence in the field, but for their thorough knowledge of the craft and its significance in years past. Our craftspeople encourage and welcome visitors, both adults and children, to participate in a “hands-on” experience during the demonstrations.

Homes Tours
Village residents open their doors and share the history of their unique homes.  Docents welcome you and speak about the history, architecture and furnishings of these dwellings. You will be introduced to the cast of colorful characters who once inhabited these fascinating houses. They were Quakers and staunch abolitionists, slave-owners, merchants, artisans, freed slaves, warriors, and idealists.

Music, Civil War, and Living History
Friends and families, adults and children all delight in lively performances of traditional music and dance; re-enactments by Colonial and Civil War-era militia and historical interpretations of historic village life Civil War re-enactors maintain camps in Waterford for the weekend. Soldiers march through the streets. And there is music everywhere—string bands, troubadours, barbershop, gospel, classical, folk, and traditional.
Farming as it used to be
Come see antique farm equipment complete with demonstrations of early farming machinery and methods. Enjoy hayrides, shelling corn with a hand cranked sheller, interactive demonstration of how wheat was separated by hand from the chaff, how wheat is threshed, and see an antique hay baler in action.

Hungry or Thirsty?
Food for every palate: barbeque ribs and pulled pork, vegetable wraps, artisanal sheep cheeses, homemade sodas, ice cream, kettle corn and freshly squeezed lemonade are just a few of the possibilities. And jams, apple butter, and soup mixes to take home.
You can also cleanse you palette with locally crafted wines and beers.
Art & Photography Exhibits
The Fair includes an art and photography exhibit, along with a popular Art Mart where you can purchase works of art by local artists.
