February 2018

Comedy Night feat. Howard G

Saturday, February 10, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Bogati Winery, 35246 Harry Byrd Hwy
Round Hill, 20141

February 17 is Comedy Night at Bogati Winery! Your ticket includes admission and a glass of Bogati wine.

Doors open at 7 PM and the first act goes on at 8 PM – this is a great way to get out of the house, sample the best wine in Virginia and pizza or lite fare, and laugh the night away with friends both new and old!

Headliner: Howard G
Howard “G” is a quick improv stand-up comic (16 years). He does celebrity impressions from old school to new school (Bill Cosby and Elvis Presley to Chris Tucker and Ray Romano). He does crowd participation that the audience will get a kick out of. Howard rewrote the “dating game” and made it must see event. Once the audience members get involved, Howard G takes them to another level they probably didn’t know they could go.

Featured Performer: Jimmy Meritt
Because he’s amazing at comedy, Jimmy Meritt spent four years as a nationally touring college act, performing in hundreds of college shows over forty six states. In addition to these live shows, you also might have seen him perform comedy on the PBS Show The Truth About Money. He also co-stars in the horror/comedy America’s Most Haunted, playing at Film Festivals around America. Jimmy has worked with some of the biggest names in comedy, such as Gilbert Gottfried, Jim Norton, Kevin Nealon, the Cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway, John Pinette, Maria Bamford, and many more!

Walnut Street Theatre: Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery

Sunday, February 11, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle
Manassas, VA 20110 United States

Madcap mastermind Ken Ludwig (Lend Me a Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo) reinvents Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1902 classic mystery, The Hound of the Baskervilles, into a hilarious romp about everyone’s favorite detective and his most famous case. The male heirs of the Baskerville line are being murdered one by one, and Sherlock Holmes, along with his trusted sidekick Dr. Watson, must work feverishly to crack the mystery of the curse before it dooms the newest heir. With only five energetic actors playing the roles of more than 40 quirky characters, this production from America’s oldest theater company takes the audience on a sidesplitting caper through the Devonshire moors, crowded railway stations, foggy London streets, and gloomy baronial mansions, where the duo searches for clues, runs into dead ends, and puzzles out the truth for the shockingly funny conclusion.

Opening Reception Pam Black, Sally Bowring, Lou Jordan: Three Voices & Judy McLeod: Current Work

Saturday, February 17, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Les Yeux du Monde, 841 Wolf Trap Rd.
Charlottesville, VA 22911 United States

Les Yeux du Monde will present Three Voices: Pam Black, Sally Bowring & Lou Jordan in the main gallery and Judy McLeod: Recent Work in the rear gallery from 17 February through 25 March 2018. There will be an opening reception with the artists on Saturday, February 17, from 3 – 5 p.m. There will also be a Lunch with Artists on Wednesday, April 16 (reservations required, $15) and a Closing Reception on Sunday, March 25 from 2 – 4 followed by a talk by Judy McLeod about her recent work.

Pam Black, who teaches at the University of Virginia in the Drama and Architecture schools, will exhibit paintings from her “Architecture of the Field” series. In these, she literally paints with her fingers in oil her observations of animals, often horses or dogs, in the fields sometimes using hand stitching reminiscent of bridle stitching. This method of working directly without even the intermediary of the brush heightens the freshness and intimacy of the scene.

Sally Bowring a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University will exhibit her high keyed colorful abstractions derived loosely from the natural world—weather, changing seasons and light patterns. Layering organic and geometric forms and subtle veils of color with strong contrasts in a square format, her works “allude to cycles, unpredictability, things seen and hidden and the repetition of life.”

Lou Jordan will exhibit exuberant paintings and collages that were inspired by her recent time in Rome at the American Academy. In many she combines palette paper and other textures to create energized compositions that bring to mind artists like Matisse and the Fauves.

Judy McLeod’s recent paintings and collages of the earth and other lands inspired by her travels while teaching at Semester at Sea will fill the rear gallery. This show is part of her multi venue 40-year retrospective also taking place at McGuffey Art Center and at Piedmont Virginia Community College in the spring.

The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday 1 – 5 and by appointment. It is located at 841 Wolf Trap Rd in Charlottesville. Visit our new website, LYDM.co or call 434-973-5566 or 434-882-2620 for more information.

Nora Jane Struthers

Saturday, March 3, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Jammin Java, 227 Maple Ave
Vienna, 22180

Nora Jane Struthers has written “some of the most quietly powerful narratives within the new wave of Americana artists” – NPR Music. The songs that weave themselves into the fabric of listeners’ lives are usually the ones in which an artist lays her soul bare for the world to hear. Struthers’ new album Champion, is built on these kinds of songs. The 13-song collection written with her band the Party Line, is the follow-up to 2015’s Wake, which earned Struthers acclaim from major outlets like NPR Music, Rolling Stone Country, and “Fresh Air” and their Live show is full to the brim with stellar musicianship, unexpected arrangements that blur the lines between folk, roots, and rock, and an audible sense that everyone in the room is having a damn good time.
