Nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains bordering Shenandoah National Park, The Farm at Sunnyside is the oldest continuously-operating apple orchard in Rappahannock County. And it offers a community-supported agriculture program, to boot! (Lucky subscribers can pick up a box of produce every week.)
Dating from 1785 (check out the pic of the pretty white clapboard farmhouse), the farm recently went into a conservation easement with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation to protect its historic values and beautiful habitat. It was formerly owned by David C. Cole, “the AOL mogul turned organic farmer” to quote Gourmet Magazine. The farm is now owned by Nick and Gardiner Lapham. You can purchase produce from Sunnyside at the Dupont and Penn Quarter Farmer’s Markets in Washington, D.C.
