March 2018

Danú

Sunday, March 4, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle
Manassas, VA 20110 United States

A leading traditional Irish ensemble comes to the Hylton Center for this big pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration of festive Celtic music. Praised by The Washington Post for their “vibrant mix of virtuosity, energy, and empathy,” Danú performs both ancient Irish music and new repertoire for a lively, flawless performance. Mason’s University Singers, a talented student ensemble from George Mason University’s School of Music, join them onstage for a one-of-a-kind experience. Hailing from Ireland’s old counties, this award-winning ensemble has thrilled audiences throughout Europe and North America with stops at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Symphony Space in New York. The virtuoso players are renowned for their mastery of authentic Irish instruments—flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, and bouzouki—which is matched by gorgeous vocals in English and Gaelic. Bring the whole family to enjoy this entertaining evening of Celtic music!

Culpeper Tells Storytelling Festival

Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West Street
Culpeper, VA 22701 United States

Join the Friends of the Culpeper County Library for our 5th annual storytelling festival featuring Charlotte Blake Alston, Josh Goforth, and Ed Stivender.

What is storytelling? Simply put, it’s timeless entertainment. Whether the stories are told around a fire, or the kitchen table, storytelling is a beloved tradition passed down through generations. Stories engage the imagination and bring people together. While it’s not stand-up comedy, although it’s often humorous. Culpeper Tells has included bluegrass and folk singing, but it’s not a concert. It’s not children’s story time, but all ages will enjoy most stories. Our storytelling festival features performances and workshops from a variety of professional storytellers, while also offering a story slam—a chance for amateurs to tell a tale.

Chamomile and Whiskey to play Jefferson Theater on St Patrick’s Day

Saturday, March 17, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Jefferson Theater, 110 E Main St
Charlottesville, VA 22901

In the spring of 2011 in Nelson County, Virginia Koda Kerl and Marie Borgman poured some Evan Williams in a hot cup of tea and decided to start a band. The idea was to organically grow a sound based around lively shows that would not be restricted by genre. They joined forces with Irishmen Ryan Lavin and started ferociously playing as much as they could. After a year of building a reputation playing rowdy bar sets they signed with County Wide Records and cut their first EP “The Barn Sessions.” The band quickly gained recognition regionally and after releasing their debut full-length record “Wandering Boots,” They began touring. A few years of cross-country tours and the band started to hit their stride…invitations to play festivals such as FloydFest, The Festy, and Arizona’s Tilted Earth Festival poured in and they were able to share the stage with national acts Old Crow Medicine Show, Robert Earl Keen, Railroad Earth, Rusted Root, and the Infamous Stringdusters among others. Their eclectic sound blends Americana and Southern Rock with Irish, Gypsy, and Old-Time all wrapped up in a raging live performance. The band hasn’t slowed down averaging nearly 150 shows a year. In the fall of 2017, the band released their sophomore record “Sweet Afton” to rave reviews. Join Chamomile and Whiskey on ST PATRICKS DAY w/ opener Trees On Fire and special guests Blue Ridge Irish Music School.
