WARRENTON, VA, October 26, 2012 – John Anderson completed the most grueling cycling race
in the country — not once, but twice. The Race Across America begins in Oceanside, California and
ends 3,000 miles and just over seven days later in Annapolis, Maryland. It is impressive for anyone to
complete it, but John Anderson is a diabetic.
Anderson spoke at Fauquier Hospital last year about the challenges he has faced, and was so inspiring
that he has been invited back. His story and down-to-earth healthy advice are useful to anyone, not
just diabetics. The public is invited to attend the event at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 8 in Fauquier
Hospital’s Sycamore Room.
Anderson has dedicated himself to educating others about living well with the disease. He does so by
walking the talk. He has learned to successfully manage diabetes by leading an exceptionally active,
healthy lifestyle.
His message isn’t about becoming a marathon cyclist; it is about helping people lead a healthier life
by making manageable lifestyle changes. Anderson understands the denial that comes with diabetes;
he lived in denial for many years. But when a medical emergency forced him to confront his illness, he
made a promise to himself and his family to change his life.
Since then, Anderson has kept his promise, not only by maintaining control of his health, but by
putting his athleticism to work raising money for those in similar situations. In 2007 and 2008, he
ran in the Marine Corps Marathon to raise money for Diabetes Action Team, a nonprofit company
committed to research. And in 2009, he was happy to start cycling with Team Type 2.
