“A Far Cry” at the Waterford Concert Series
A Far Cry, an 18-member chamber orchestra from Boston, performs music by Mozart, Golijov and Sibelius on April 17. Boston magazine called A Far Cry “a thoroughly modern, century-spanning globe-trotting sonic adventure.” The Criers, as fans worldwide know them, are self-conducted: leadership rotates among ensemble members both on stage and behind the scenes. Boston recommends: “Catch this group live!” (4/17/16, 4 PM: $30 adult, $15 student) Sponsored by the Betty McGowin Charitable Trust.

TheatreWashingtonVA.comBluegrass & BBQ Series Featuring The Foghorn Stringband
Join us for a night of Bluegrass & BBQ with The Foghorn Stringband playing their “Hard Hittin’ Rural American” music!
The sound of the Portland, Oregon’s Foghorn Stringband could have come barreling through the grille-cloth of those big console radios in the living rooms of the 1950’s, when the traditional sounds of rural America were still on the minds of young musicians transferring the old-time music to a distinctively modern age. Their tight instrumental work and line-up – fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass and guitar – is reminiscent of early bluegrass, but their powerful approach is whole-heartedly old-time, centered largely by the fiddle. Devoted to the interpretation and performance of American stringband music, their style encompasses early country music, the fiddle repertoire of the Southern Appalachians and the Midwest, and the stringband sounds of the Piedmont region.

“Open Late” Summer Concert Series at the NSLM
The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) is pleased to announce the return of Open Late, the free summer concert series that takes place once a month from April through August. The event series features regional performers, craft beers, and local wineries, and guests can stroll through the art Museum from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
“Everyone is invited to relax on our campus lawn, enjoy a musical concert, try regional wines and Virginia craft beers, and picnic with friends. We’ve planned these events with young families in mind and with the hope that those passing through Middleburg heading east or west after work will join us,” explains Melanie Mathewes, Executive Director of the National Sporting Library & Museum.
The Open Late series was created in 2015 as a community event to provide area residents a unique opportunity to explore the art exhibitions and collections on view in the Museum. “Knowing everyone has busy schedules during the day, we thought staying open late would give people a chance to come and visit,” says Mathewes.
Open Late is a free, public event. Picnics are welcome and a cash bar will be available – no outside alcohol is permitted on premises. The event is rain or shine.

Smithsonian at Little Washington: Kenneth Slowik
As the 24th season of the Smithsonian at Little Washington concert series comes to a close, Kenneth Slowik will perform compositions by the great Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach on Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m. Slowik will be playing on cello and harpsichord.
Kenneth Slowik is an American cellist, viol player, and conductor, Curator of Musical Instrument Collection at the National Museum of American History and Artistic Director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society. He will be playing a German-styled harpsichord made by Thomas and Barbara Wolf, of The Plains, and modeled after an instrument made in Hanover in 1738 by Christian Vater. Slowik says, “It’s a beautiful instrument, sonorous, yet with wonderfully clear articulation—just about perfect, chronologically and sonically, for Bach.”
A highly valued feature of all the concerts in the Smithsonian at Little Washington series is the commentary which Kenneth Slowik provides throughout the program. His remarks shed light on the glorious music and the life and times of the featured composers. Slowik was the recipient in 2011 of the Smithsonian Secretary’s Distinguished Research Lecture Award, and the remarks during the concerts at the Theatre at Washington, Virginia, are generally a shortened version of the talk which precedes each of the concerts heard in Washington D.C.
