A Timeless Perspective

Visual Expressions is an “over 55” community art group that originated in Prince William County, Virginia. It was established in 2014 to promote creative endeavors to stimulate the mind, reduce the effects of stress-related diseases, and slow cognitive decline. The art group consists of graphic artists, art educators, and self-taught hobbyists. Soothing landscapes, realistic animal portraits, and vibrant abstract compositions make up their eclectic oeuvre and reflect a lifetime of learning, traveling, and exploring new techniques and mediums. Meet the artists at the opening reception, June 16, 6-8 pm.

Greater Manassas/Prince William County sponsors theatrical productions for children and adults, teaches arts classes, promotes visual arts and provides community outreach programs for local youth. Founded in 1984 by a group of artists and art lovers, the Center aims to enrich the quality of life in the Northern Virginia suburbs through arts performance and education. A theater, an art gallery and classrooms are located in the historic Candy Factory building in Old Town Manassas, at 9419 Battle Street.

Don’t miss your chance to camp out in the beautiful Historic Mount Bleak backyard. See all that Sky Meadows has to offer through activities beginning at noon on Saturday and running until noon on Sunday. Park rangers will be on hand to help you set up your campsite and tent. First time and experienced campers won’t want to miss all the fun programs, including the Fishing in Parks program, a demonstration by Dogs East search and rescue, a campfire sing-a-long, s’mores, nature hikes, hearth cooking demonstrations and more.
Space is limited. Advanced reservations are $30 per campsite, plus taxes and fees. Campsites can accommodate up to six individuals. Dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday are included in your campsite fee. For reservations call 1-800-933-PARK.

Windmore Foundation for the Arts StageWorks Theater will be presenting Southern Fried Funeral by Osborne and Eppler and directed by Christine Corrieri. This is a very funny play about family interactions, friendships, and disagreements which have not been resolved for forty years.The performances will be on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday June 24 at 3pm at Prince Michel Barrel Room, 154 Winery Lane, Leon, VA. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased online at windmorefoundation.org. Some tickets may be available at the door but seating is limited to 50 people for each performance. Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket and join us the last Friday of the month, May – August from 6:00-8:00pm on the NSLM lawn for live music. Concessions and cash bar available. Also enjoy free admission to our museum! The June 29th concert will feature the Silver Tones Swing Band, playing classic Big Band tunes, and is in partnership with The Hill School and Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. No rain date. No outside alcohol.

On Friday June 29, we’re staying up late to watch the full moon rise, and we hope you’ll join us in the vineyard to see the valley illuminated by moonlight!

We’ll have live music from the extraordinary Cristian Perez and we will even be offering tapas on this night only!

If you don’t want tapas, this event is completely free to attend!

Tapas are available by reservation only; reservations for tapas must be made by Wednesday, June 27. The cost for tapas is $15 per person.

Join The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail and the National Museum of the Marine Corps in commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War 1! Discover the technology of “The Great War”. “The War to End All Wars: Fauquier’s Call to Duty”
2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Discover the different ways Fauquier County aided in the Great War. Help us commemorate those who served, as well as those who helped the war effort back home. Exhibit opens June 30th!

Make memories that last a lifetime in the beautiful setting of Turner Pond on a summer evening. Kids, grab some fishing gear and learn how to fish with volunteers. Visit with park rangers to learn about the critters that live in and around Turner Pond. Enjoy snacks and drinks provided by the Friends of Sky Meadows, and have a chance to win fishing supplies and other great door prizes.
Parking for the event is $5.00 per car. Virginia resident children under 16 years of age can fish without a license. Non-resident children under 12 do not need a license if accompanied by a properly licensed adult. All others, VA DGIF fishing regulations apply.

Grab your poodle skirt and grease up your hair. Roots and Rocks Adventures is bringing the 50’s back for the Summer Lovin’ 5k Trail Race. This race is great for the experienced trail runner, for road runners who are curious about trying trails and even new runners and walkers who want to experience the camaraderie and sheer joy that comes with trail running.
After the race join Roots and Rocks for a Grease-themed dance party with a runner’s recovery tent provided by Pivot Physical Therapy, and an abundance of post-race food, music and random prizes. Then stick around for awards for the top 3 finishers overall and for each 10-year age group.

Washington’s Shadow: Images in Limbo
Featuring Lynn McIntosh

Lynn McIntosh is a native of Bluefield, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. In Washington’s Shadow, Lynn has placed each image in limbo; which is like a “spotlight” to remove the distraction of a surrounding background – and, perhaps, to encourage a quiet and thoughtful emotional response. Although limbo photography is not a new technique, Lynn’s historical application suggests a dimension beyond the obvious, by surrounding the subject as if it is floating in infinite blackness. His collection contains familiar images of patriots and cataclysmic pitfalls that tested the mettle of the heroes who served after, and long after, our first president. In addition to provoking thought, the collection portrays a chronological historical narrative as each image relates to the picture that precedes or follows it. Experience the narrative for yourself & meet the photographer at the opening reception, July 21, 6-8 pm. “Washington’s Shadow”, a guided artist talk, will begin at 6:45 pm. Receptions are free and open to the public.

From Marine Barracks Washington, DC, the Battle Color Detachment is comprised of “The Commandant’s Own,” The United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, The United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and the Marine Corps Color Guard. The Battle Color Detachment will perform a Battle Color Ceremony on the Museum’s parade deck.

The Museum galleries, theater, store and diner will stay open until the start of the performance.

From July 20 through August 26, 2018, Les Yeux du Monde presents Summertime…, featuring the work of nine artists evoking summer’s varied scenes and associations. Some of these artists—Anne Chesnut, Richard Crozier, Trisha Orr, Megan Marlatt, Lincoln Perry and Priscilla Long Whitlock—are long time favorites with the gallery with many shows to their history. Others are exciting newcomers to our stable—Abby Kasonik, Sarah Boyts Yoder and Cate West Zahl. Subjects and mediums vary from Anne Chesnut’s Summer Samplers, multi layered prints that she hand stitches together, to Richard Crozier’s oil paintings of bountiful summer gardens, Megan Marlatt’s whimsical carnival scenes from her semester in Belgium, Lincoln Perry’s watercolors of Italian sojourns, and Priscilla Long Whitlock’s oils of the ocean or fields in summer. If the aforementioned artists are on the representational end of the spectrum, newcomers work mostly in the abstract idiom. Abby Kasonik will show her trademark atmospheric indigo acrylic paintings along with newer oil stick and mixed media works on paper; Sarah Boyts Yoder will exhibit ebullient surprising acrylic abstractions and Cate West Zahl will show more linear and geometric oils in summery saturated greens and blues. Trisha Orr not only will exhibit paintings of idyllic revelers by the river or shopping and making summer feasts, she also will exhibit a few of her powerful expressionistic series, Charlottesville Burning, evoking in the horrendous events on the Lawn and in Charlottesville last August 12.
