Bluegrass & BBQ with Town Mountain. Saturday, 7 p.m., Barns of Rose Hill, Berryville. The sound of the award-winning group Town Mountain can best be described as traditional bluegrass, albeit with a rough-hewn side to it that is not too slick or glossy. They are a band of the here-and-now, yet they have a groove that is based on the bluesy and swinging sounds explored by the first generation of bluegrass pioneers of the last century.
Ellis Paul and Mariana Bell. Friday, 8 p.m., The Southern Café & Music Hall, Charlottesville. Ellis Paul’s songwriting credentials are unassailable. They are as genuine as the 15 Boston Music Awards he has earned, as indelible as the tattoo of Woody Guthrie that adorns his arm, and as authentic as the musical roots he draws upon with every note he plays.
The Lucketts Fair. Saturday & Sunday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Lucketts Community Center, Leesburg. Re-discover The Lucketts Fair, a family-friendly event which honors Lucketts’ agrarian roots. Enjoy bluegrass music all weekend under the gazebo, thrill at the border collies herding sheep, take a load off and enjoy a hayride, let the little ones loose in the hay maze, squish grapes and sample the juice, dominate the mechanical bull, dance with the cloggers, shop at the juried crafters and artisans, explore for antiques, refuel on great fair food, squeeze some apple cider, and so much more!
GenreBlast Film Festival. Friday-Sunday, The State Theatre, Culpeper. The inauguration of this film festival for filmmakers, by filmmakers, comes to the Piedmont. This isn’t your usual film-fest. This is a celebration of genre cinema, those oft-discarded experimental films that critics overlook. Fantasy, foreign, sci-fi, and more! Beat the heat by staying inside and enjoying some independent movies.
