The Market at Grelen, 15091 Yager Rd.
Somerset, VA United States

Terrariums require minimal care, make great gifts and are simply beautiful which is why they get so much attention in the gardening world. The Market at Grelen customers continue to show plenty of passion for the subject, so we are offering this popular class again. Come get your hands dirty and learn how to create one of these beauties using one of our Garden Terrarium Kits. Everything you need is included in the kit, except miniature plants. Plants & Miniatures will be 15% off for all participants on the day of the workshop. There is no “workshop fee” as we are only charging for materials. Coffee is included. If you’d rather make a terrarium using a different type of terrarium (we have lots!), that is fine, but please email info@themarketatgrelen so that we can sign you up and quote you a custom price. “Project Wild Thing” Screening

Friday, April 22, 2016 @ 4:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Hill School, 130 S. Madison St.
Middleburg, VA United States

The Land Trust of Virginia, in conjunction with the Goose Creek Association and Blue Ridge Wildlife Center, will host a free screening of Project Wild Thing on Friday April 22, 2016 at The Hill School Performing Arts Center in Middleburg, VA. The 4:30 screening will be preceded by a visit from the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center’s Animal Ambassadors and a second screening will be held at 7:15 pm. Admission is free.

Project Wild Thing is a documentary chronicling one man’s personal quest to get his children off the couch and into the great outdoors and is an ambitious, feature-length documentary that takes a funny and accessible look at a complex issue, the increasingly fragile connection between children and nature.

David Bond is a filmmaker and a father.  Things have really changed since he was a kid.  His children are hooked on screens and don’t want to go outdoors; they want iPads, TV and plastic toys. The marketing departments of Apple, Disney and Mattel control his children better than he can.  Determined to get them up and out, David appoints himself as the Marketing Director for Nature.  With the help of branding and outdoor experts, he develops and launches a nationwide marketing campaign to get British children outside. But the competition is not going to lie down and let some upstart with a free product steal their market.  Project Wild Thing is the hilarious, real-life story of one man’s determination to get children out and into the ultimate, free wonder-product: Nature.

The Hill School is located at 130 S. Madison St, Middleburg, VA.

Art at the Mill: Burwell Morgan Mill

Saturday, April 23, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
|Recurring Event (See all)

Burwell Morgan Mill, 15 Tannery Lane
Millwood, VA United States

In October 1990, a small group of artists got together and proposed an idea for an art show at the Burwell-Morgan Mill.  Using whatever material they could find to install the art, these artists worked tirelessly to produce what was to become the very first Art at the Mill show.  Over time, Art at the Mill has grown from a three-day show of a handful of art into one of the most recognized and prestigious art shows in the region.  Though Art at the Mill has grown substantially over the years to include thousands of artists and buyers from all over the country, the show’s basic principles remain the same:  to have fun, bring together artists and promote the extraordinary artistic talent of the region.

Art at the Mill will be open this spring during the following hours:  Sundays-Fridays 12-5, Saturdays 10-6.

Mothers, please join us for a Free Admission Day on Mother’s Day, May 8th!  Mothers get in free!  Also, if you bring your mother, the both of you get in free!

War in the Chesapeake: The British Campaigns to Control the Bay, 1813-14

Sunday, April 24, 2016 @ 2:00 am - 5:00 pm
Thomas Balch LIbrary, 208 W. Market St.
Leesburg, VA 20176 United States

With Charles Neimeyer: When President James Madison declared war against Britain in the summer of 1812, the United States of America was far from united. Despite Britain’s trouble with Napoleon, the decision to go to war with a superior military power was bold, and it could have been disastrous. War in the Chesapeake tells the story of the British campaigns of 1813 and 1814 and provides valuable insights into the courage and incompetence from both of the warring parties. By the summer campaign of 1814, the British had trounced the Americans at Bladensburg and burned Washington, DC. British leaders, Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane and Major General Robert Ross, did not expect any other strong resistance after these quick victories. However, the Americans shocked the British with a stalwart defense at Fort McHenry and achieved a historic American victory. War in the Chesapeake tells the stories of naval leaders like John Rodgers, Stephen Decatur, and Major General Samuel Smith, whose leadership at Baltimore was decisive and masterful. It provides a look back at the operations leading to one of the most famous nights in American history, the defense of Fort McHenry. Charles Neimeyer’s work shows the significance and power of American courage in the face of adversity, and War in the Chesapeake is a comprehensive study of the young U.S. Navy’s performance during the War of 1812.
Charles P. Neimeyer is currently the director of Marine Corps history and the Gray Research Center at Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia. Prior to coming to Quantico, Neimeyer served as dean of academics at the Naval War College and the Forrest Sherman Chair of Public Diplomacy in Newport, Rhode Island, as well as vice president of academic affairs at Valley Forge Military Academy and College. He also served as a history professor at the US Naval Academy and the University of Central Oklahoma. He is the author of America Goes to War: A Social History of the Continental Army, 1775–1783, and The Revolutionary War. Books will be available for purchase.
Programs sponsored by Thomas Balch Library are held in the downstairs meeting room and are free unless otherwise noted.  Due to limited seating we recommend registering in advance by calling 703/737-7195 or emailing us at balchlib@leesburgva.gov

Bluegrass & BBQ Series Featuring The Foghorn Stringband

Sunday, April 24, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
The Barns at Rose Hill, 95 Chalmers Court
Berryville, VA 22611 United States

Join us for a night of Bluegrass & BBQ with The Foghorn Stringband playing their “Hard Hittin’ Rural American” music!

The sound of the Portland, Oregon’s Foghorn Stringband could have come barreling through the grille-cloth of those big console radios in the living rooms of the 1950’s, when the traditional sounds of rural America were still on the minds of young musicians transferring the old-time music to a distinctively modern age. Their tight instrumental work and line-up – fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bass and guitar – is reminiscent of early bluegrass, but their powerful approach is whole-heartedly old-time, centered largely by the fiddle. Devoted to the interpretation and performance of American stringband music, their style encompasses early country music, the fiddle repertoire of the Southern Appalachians and the Midwest, and the stringband sounds of the Piedmont region.

Beer, Bourbon, Bacon and Beyond Dinner at The New Bridge Wine Bar & Restaurant

Tuesday, April 26, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The New Bridge Wine Bar & Restaurant, 29 Main Street
Warrenton, 20186

We are collaborating with Heritage Brewing, Catoctin Creek Distilling Company and Whiffletree Farm to bring you a twist on our pairing dinners. Instead of a wine-paired dinner, we will be pairing distilled spirits and craft beer with recipes of all things pork (of course, that means some bacon!)

Yes, we know that the spirits from Catoctin Creek are technically whiskey. The name of the event could be misleading, but we liked the alliteration of it! Forgive us!

This is a celebration of sustainable, locally-sourced and organic production methods from farms, breweries and distilleries.

Whiffletree Farm uses farming methods that create the best environment for it’s animals, improves the fertility of the land, and results in the most nutritious meat and eggs for customers. Their beef cattle are 100% grass fed. Turkeys, broiler chickens, pigs, and laying hens live outdoors and are given feed without any genetically modified ingredients.

Heritage Brewing uses 100% Organic base malts and 92% of all ingredients are either organic or locally sourced.

Catoctin Creek Organic Roundstone Rye® is one of the few organic whiskeys in the entire world!

Did you know that Heritage Brewing Amber Ale is aged in Catoctin Creek Distilling Company rye whiskey barrels? How’s that for tying it all together?

The menu is inspired by the book, Beyond Bacon: Paleo Recipes that Respect the Whole Hog by PaleoParents http://paleoparents.com/

Call 540-349-9339 or email elizabeth@thenewbridge.net to make reservations. $80 per person

The National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) is pleased to announce the return of Open Late, the free summer concert series that takes place once a month from April through August. The event series features regional performers, craft beers, and local wineries, and guests can stroll through the art Museum from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“Everyone is invited to relax on our campus lawn, enjoy a musical concert, try regional wines and Virginia craft beers, and picnic with friends. We’ve planned these events with young families in mind and with the hope that those passing through Middleburg heading east or west after work will join us,” explains Melanie Mathewes, Executive Director of the National Sporting Library & Museum.

The Open Late series was created in 2015 as a community event to provide area residents a unique opportunity to explore the art exhibitions and collections on view in the Museum. “Knowing everyone has busy schedules during the day, we thought staying open late would give people a chance to come and visit,” says Mathewes.
